Furniture DIY: Use THIS £1.50 item to stop your drawers from creaking and getting stuck

Stuck drawers are a number one furniture hate, but a handy DIY trick can help them to open and close smoothly in no time.

The easy trick is to use a cheap accessible lubricant to get them open – in this case, petroleum jelly.

You can by this from the supermarket for just £3, and far from being just for moisturising skin, it will be a domestic lifesaver on your furniture.

“Put petroleum jelly on the outside corners of drawers and on hinges to stop squeaking and loosen them up,” advise the money saving experts at Promotional Codes.

The jelly forms a lubricating barrier between the creaky hinge and the outer drawer, meaning it slides much more easily in and out.

Darren Williams from PromotionalCodes.org.uk said: “The average home is full of items that have many more uses than just the one they’re designed for.

“Homeowners could be saving time and money by putting these items to good use instead of chucking them in the bin.

“Rather than going to the shop people should look first to their own homes.

“There are plenty of multipurpose items there that could save the day.”

When it comes to maintaining the appearance of your furniture, the experts have a further tip.

Olive oil – which can be purchased for just £3 at supermarkets – is said to be an excellent wooden furniture polish.

A cloth soaked in the substance and rubbed on furniture will make it look as good as new again.

Better still, it is said the cheaper the better – so don’t go wasting expensive extra virgin olive oil on your kitchen table.

Recently, it was revealed installing a £39 ceiling fan could save you up to a third on your gas bill.

Typically, ceiling fans are used for generating a cool breeze during the summer. However, many do not realise they can equally be used to circulate warm air in your home during the winter.

As a result, you won’t have to crank up the thermostat – and you will save money on your heating bill.
