The actress, who plays Christian Grey’s mother in the franchise, confirmed that she had been asked to take down a gag about nipple clamps from her own social media feed.
Speaking to Access Hollywood, she said: “It’s a romance, and EL [James, the book’s writer] wanted to make sure people understood it was a romance.
“I was a bit fascinated with the toys! I had sent out a tweet that said something like, ‘Dear Christian, thank you for the lovely sweater clasp.’
“But the picture was a nipple clamp! But they were like, ‘Marcia, you can’t do that’. I was like, ‘okay’.”
She added: “They told my publicist and I had to delete it.”
But speaking about the “spicy” movies, she elaborated: “The audiences are really canny and the audiences are really tongue in cheek.
“So they like Momma Grey being a bit spicy! That’s good! We want it to be a romance.
“You should have seen the screening, when he [Jamie Dornan, Christian Grey] does the push-ups… the women were screaming and cheering.”
The movie and its original books have frequently been condemned for their portrayals of BDSM and have faced allegations of glorifying abuse.
