FIFA hits World Cup hosts Russia with fine for fans’ discriminatory banner

FIFA has fined World Cup hosts Russia for a discriminatory banner displayed by fans during their team’s 3-0 group stage defeat to Uruguay.

The World Cup hosts were fined 10,000 Swiss francs ($ 10,100), although no details were released on the contents of the banner.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee also handed a fine of 10,000 Swiss francs to Serbia over a “political and offensive banner” displayed by supporters in the 2-0 defeat to Brazil in Moscow.

Further fines of 15,000 Swiss francs were handed out to the Mexican Football Federation for “crowd disturbance” by supporters who threw objects during the match against Sweden in Ekaterinburg.

The Moroccan Football Association was hit with an even larger fine of 65,000 Swiss francs fine for a series of incidents in the match against Spain, including for members of the technical staff forcing their way onto the pitch after the final whistle and for crowd disturbance by fan.

Moroccan player Nordin Amrabat was warned after appearing to mouth “VAR is bulls***” following his team’s controversial 2-2 draw with Spain, in which Iago Aspas scored a stoppage-time equalizer which was awarded with the help of video technology.
