The latest movie, Fate of the Furious, is racing to global box office glory but not everyone is driving off into the sunset together.
A huge row ignited on set last year and reports exposed an ongoing feud between the two main stars, action men Diesel and Johnson.
With the studio keen to capitalise on the franchise’s spectacular success, plans are already being made to forge a new dream team.
A new film is being developed with Statham replacing Diesel in the driving seat.
Deadline added: “The idea is for Johnson’s U.S. Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs to form an unlikely alliance with Statham’s Decker Shaw for a movie that conceivably could be made while they are figuring the next Fast film.”
Neither star has been with the franchise from the beginning but have fast become fan favourites.
Crucially their participation coincided with the moment the franchise suddenly started to post huge box box office returns after 2011’s Fast Five, when Johnson joined.
Staham entered the fray as bad boy Decker Shaw in Fast & Furious 6.
He is joined by a fellow famous Brit in the latest installment. Helen Mirren plays his mother, the terrifying Mrs Shaw, who gives him a resounding slap across the face in one memorable scene (see clip above).
The spin-off plans are unlikely to affect the longterm ten-film cycle that has been confirmed for teh main franchise.
They are unlikely, however, to mend any fences between the bald blockbuster stars who headline them.
