Famous plane crash in Iceland where all passengers survived – but remains a mystery

In 1973, a famous plane crash in Iceland hit the news when everyone onboard survived.

The United States Navy DC plane ran out of fuel after the pilot switched to the wrong fuel tank, it is rumoured.

It was then forced to crash land on a black beach at Sólheimasandur on the South Coast, thereby being named the Sólheimasandur plane crash.

Yet the exact reason behind it, as well as the exact date is still to be decided upon.

The Aviation Safety Network reports the crash on November 24, whilst a paper in Iceland reported it on November 21.

After the crash, the plane was never recovered and the empty fuselage is all that is left.

The plane wreckage has remained on the black beach since it crashed, becoming a popular tourist attraction.

Many people head to see the post-apocalyptic wreckage which has also featured in a number of adverts and music videos.

It isn’t the easiest place to get to, with vehicles being banned on the land in March 2016 by locals.

Just two hours from Reykjavik, people park their cars and walk over two miles to get to it.

The mystery surrounding it remains, with its origin, date and even what happened still undecided on.

There is little news on the captain or the survivors since the crash over 40 years ago.

Sadly not all aviation crashes have such a positive ending.

The deadlist plane crash in aviation history occurred just four years after the Iceland accident.

After a problem with air traffic control, two planes collided on the tarmac in 1977 at Tenerife Airport.

Between the two aircraft carriers, 583 people died.
