The couple, who have been married for four years, confessed to declining a storyline presented by ITV bosses.
Show producers suggested Charley and Matthew character’s Debbie Dingle and David Metcalfe be romantically linked, but the couple admitted to turning down the idea.
Opening up about their decision, Matthew said: “They once told us they were considering it and we were the first to ring up and ask for it not to happen!”
“It’s too much – living with each other, working with each other and then being romantically linked in the show together. Also, they are characters who wouldn’t suit,” Charley told OK! Magazine.
The couple who share two young sons, Buster Wolfenden and Bowie Grey Wolfenden, also spoke about extending their family.
“We’ll start thinking about having another baby next year. We’d love a girl but I think we’re destined to have a house full of boys,” Matthew said.
Meanwhile, Charley, 29, and Matthew, 37, revealed they have no intentions of leaving Emmerdale anytime soon.
Matthew even admitted he could see himself working on the soap for the rest of his career.
However, Charley confessed she’d like to play another character at some stage, although she is happy on the show at the moment.
“I get to go home to Buster and Bowie each night and you can’t put a price on that,” Charley said.
“There’s no job more important than being with your family.”
