Emmerdale viewers have been urging the soap to end the grooming storyline between Maya Stepney (played by Louisa Clein) and Jacob Gallagher (Joe Warren-Plant).
But in more recent scenes, the relationship between the school teacher and pupil has developed to the point of them considering getting sexually intimate with one another.
As viewers tune in to see some uncomfortable exchanges, show producer Kate Brooks has confirmed the storyline will be coming to an end soon.
During a conversation with Metro, Kate responded to viewers discomfort and said: “It can make for uncomfortable viewing but I think it’s really important storyline to tell.
“We’ve been working really closely with Banardo’s to make sure that we get it right, and doing a lot of other peoples stories justice.
“It is something that’s not really been touched on in soaps, it’s a tricky story to tell but we’ve managed to so far to tell it as sensitively as possible.”
She went on to say how “close” the team has worked with the actors involved and how the “research team were really keen to get it right”.
“There’s still a long way to go, it’s not going to be as straightforward as you’d imagine, there’s going to be other obstacles thrown into the mix, we want people to be yelling at the TV ‘please tell somebody. This is not right! You’re a young lad, please speak out about this.’”
Whilst the storyline will be ending imminently, she teased another twist to the plot.
“There’s another chapter of that coming it. It does turn into love and he [Jacob] does think he’s in love with this woman,” Kate remarked.
As for Maya, she has to keep up appearances and her reputation as a teacher within the community. “She has a lot to lose if this secret comes out,” Kate warned. “An’d she’ll go to certain lengths to make sure it doesn’t come out.”
Whilst an end to the storyline is in sight, what will the outcome be and will viewers see Jacob get the justice he deserves?
Kate explained how they have “a responsibility” as a soap “to make sure the right protocol is carried out and the right outcome”.
It is no doubt David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) will experience a range of emotions when he finds out what has been going on within his own home. Could he be out for revenge?
Kate teased the possibility of a court case within the soap and said: “Potentially [there will be].” But surprisingly continued with: “Whether it’s to do with Maya and Jacob I couldn’t tell you. It might not be that case. Wait and see.”
As the actress recently revealed how she was pregnant with her third child, there has been much speculation surrounding how she will depart from the village temporarily.
There is a possibility Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) could still be alive and later this week Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) is going to receive a mystery phone call.
Could it be Joe ringing to find out how Debbie is doing and in a secret twist lure her away from Emmerdale?
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV.
