Speaking to Tim Lovejoy and fellow Strictly Come Dancing star Simon Rimmer, Gemma explained that the door has been left open for a return.
However, fans will have to wait at least another year as Gemma has just signed another contract as a radio presenter and ruled out working two jobs at once.
Gemma, 33, said: “Emmerdale’s left open and I absolutely love it! So I’ll never say never, but at the minute I can’t do both.
“I did both for six months and it just, the hours, it killed me… and the travelling.”
Fans of Carly have begged Gemma to reprise her character in the soap ever since her exit.
One viewer tweeted: “@emmerdale Bring Gemma Atkinson back.”
“@MissGAtkinson when are you returning to Emmerdale then Gemma your being missed massive! x,” posted another.
A third added: “@emmerdale @MissGAtkinson Hope you return to Emmerdale Gemma. I really miss your character x.”
Gemma previously told OK! magazine that she would only return to Emmerdale on one condition.
She said: “It was left open and they’re an amazing bunch.
“So as long as the storylines are right and it fits in with everyone, of course I would.”
While the actress may not be learning lines anymore, she noted that she still speaks to her fellow cast mates.
She added: “I’ve stayed in touch with all of them – and I’m still in the Emmerdolls [band]!
“I speak to Mark Charnock, who plays Marlon Dingle, a lot.”
