Last Monday, fan favourite Rhona Goskirk (played by Zoe Henry) was sexually attacked by her new husband Pierce Harris (Jonathan Wrather) on her wedding night.
The upsetting scene, which saw Pierce violently push his new bride to the floor before forcing himself on her, attracted 62 complaints to the Broadcasting regulator.
Today Ofcom confirmed that they would be looking into the matter, with a representative telling Express.co.uk: “We have received 62 complaints about Monday night’s Emmerdale.
“We will assess these complaints before deciding whether or not to investigate.”
Actress Zoe, who has plays Rhona, recently admitted she had been “concerned” about the rape scene being aired on TV.
Speaking about the storyline’s dark twist on This Morning, the 43-year-old said: “Yeah, we’ve been quite anxious about this coming out because when we read the scripts it went further for us than we imagined it would.
“We knew it was a coercive control and relationship storyline, we didn’t know it was going to get to this.
“I did air my concerns about how we could show it, but the director, Nickie Lister, pitched it perfectly.”
The soap star added that she had received a mixed response following the episode, commenting: “There’s been a real cross section of people. We reflect real life but there’s also the side that it was too early.”
