The BBC have confirmed that the renegade Time Lord’s shock return will officially happen in the tenth series’ June 24 episode, called World Enough and Time.
The character was last seen on the sci-fi drama in 2009 when David Tennant held the coveted role in its tenth incarnation. The Master then departed from the show with a bang after helping Tennant’s lead battle to save Earth from the Time Lord invasion in the episode The End of Time.
The news comes as something of a surprise to fans who have watched the character’s female reincarnation Missy (played by Michelle Gomez) alongside Peter Capaldi this season.
But viewers can expect that Simm’s story-line will continue on into the finale, which is titled ‘The Doctor Falls’. The finale will also feature the Cybermen from the classic 1960s episodes.
Gomez admitted that she had no idea that The Master would return until the actors got together for a read-through.
She said: “I didn’t really know what was happening until the read-through, because I hadn’t read the script. I thought, ‘Oh I’ll just leave it this year, and at the read-through I’ll really it all unfolding as we all get together’.
“And I walked into the read-through and John was sitting there. It didn’t even register – I thought, ‘Oh it’s John, it’s nice to see John’,” the actress added.
The 50-year-old also revealed that she got very excited by the script: “We started reading and it was obvious that I hadn’t read the script, because I started shrieking at things, as various events unfolded in that episode.”
If the two episodes feature both Missy and The Master then it will be the first time in the history of the series that it has featured two incarnations together.
