Disney hack: Leak fears as Pirates of the Caribbean 5 ‘stolen and held for ransom’

Despite signs last night appearing to point towards Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi being the film at the centre of the scandal, reports now seem to agree that it is the latest swashbuckler starring Johnny Depp.

Bob Iger was said by The Hollywood Reporter to have told those at an ABC meeting that Disney has been contacted by the hackers, who are demanding to be paid in bitcoin [digital currency] or they will begin to release the film online.

It is thought that they will drip-feed the blockbuster in 20-minute chunks until their demands are met.

Iger, however, is said to be firmly refusing to pay up – and he also did not disclose which film is at the centre of the storm.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5, subtitled Dead Men Tell No Tales in the US and Salazar’s Revenge elsewhere (including the UK), is set for release next week, May 26.

Fears are already alleged to be brewing at Disney HQ over lead star Johnny Depp’s year of negative publicity, and how it may dent the film’s potential income.

So it’s safe to say that an illegal leak would be far from welcome news.

Mark James, security specialist at IT security company ESET, told the BBC: “Anything that has a value will always be a potential victim of theft, either digital or physical.

“If someone has it and someone wants it then in theory there’s a market for it.”

Iger is said to be working with federal investigators in a bid to track the hackers down.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is out on May 26.
