BBC One will be airing its new series of Death in Paradise from tonight (Thursday, January 10) at 9pm. The series is Ardal O’Hanlon’s second as lead detective DI Jack Mooney after he took over the reign of the drama from Kris Marshall in earnest in 2018. Here’s a look at the episode count and plot of the new series.

How many episodes are in Death in Paradise 2019?

Death in Paradise 2019 consists of eight episodes – just like all the previous runs before it.

Episodes will be airing on a weekly basis as the show takes viewers back to the sun-soaked island.

Speaking about the new series, actor Tobi Bakare told media including Express.co.uk: “The show is ambitious. Lots of ambitious decisions this year and it was fun. I want to say same as usual but it just wasn’t.

“I feel the show has developed an identity over the eight years that it’s been running and so I think [it can] slightly move off it and come back to it again. I think this year we see that happen quite a lot.”

What will happen in Death in Paradise 2019?

Season nine will see more of the same as the team takes on a brand new series of cases with more murders.

Among the cases in this series include a DJ who is killed at a radio station, a death at a zoo, and a murder on a bus.

There will also be a two-parter and also a stag do murder which the team will have to solve.

Bakare went on to tease that the show would be venturing out further from the fictional town of Saint Marie and seeing other communities on the island.

He explained: “Everyone knows Saint Marie but what’s beautiful this year is that we actually dip into another community. It has its own identity, its own vibe.”

The actor continued: “I don’t know any other time where the show has really dug into a community like that, the community of Saint Marie, really dug into it like this. There are a couple of episodes that do that this year.”

Who is in the cast of Death in Paradise 2019?

Ardal O’Hanlon will be leading the cast once more as British detective DI Jack Mooney.

Joining him will be Josephine Jobert as DS Florence Cassell and Tobi Bakare as Officer JP Hooper.

Veteran cast member Don Warrington will be reprising his role Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.

However, Danny John-Jules will not be in the new series as policemen Dwayne Myers after confirming his departure last year.

Newcomer Shyko Amos will be joining the cast this year as Ruby Patterson, the niece of Commissioner Selwyn.

Reflecting on her character, Amos said: “She’s kind of like the daughter he never had. It’s this very close relationship and I would say Ruby is definitely a person who doesn’t fit into really any boxes.

“He gets her this job and she definitely brings her very unique personality to this force and it creates some things.”

There will lots of guest appearances as usual with famous names including Holby City star Chizzy Akudolu, Downton Abbey’s Rob James-Collier and Rebecca Front, among others.
