Daredevil cancelled: Why did Netflix cancel Daredevil? Will it return to Disney?

Despite a critically acclaimed third season, Netflix has cancelled Daredevil. This cancellation comes a month after Netflix axed their other Marvel shows Iron Fist and Luke Cage. However, the statement that announces Netflix cancelled Daredevil seemed to suggest the series would return on the Disney streaming service Disney Plus.

Why did Netflix cancel Daredevil?

According to Netflix, Daredevil was cancelled because the network bosses “feel it best to close this chapter on a high note”.

However, there has been some speculation that the streaming giant are choosing to focus on their in-house productions rather than shows made by outside providers to save on licensing fees.

For example, a report on The Motley Fool read: “Observers and investors should expect Netflix to keep killing off shows made by outside studios and pushing its Netflix Studios content harder and harder.

“Studio tribalism is the future of streaming.”

WHO IS IN THE CAST OF DAREDEVIL?

Netflix’s statement on the cancellation of Daredevil read: “Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix.

“We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note.

“We’re thankful to our partners at Marvel, showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years.”

Last month, Netflix also cancelled Iron Fist and Luke Cage.

The fates of Netflix’s other Marvel series The Punisher is not known but Jessica Jones’ third outing has already been greenlit.

Will Daredevil return on the Disney streaming service?

The end of Netflix’s statement has led to speculation the series may continue on Disney Plus, the streaming service the Mouse House is launching in 2019.

“While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel,” Netflix said.

This promise that the character of Daredevil (played by Charlie Cox) will return could mean multiple things.

One option is that the character will appear in one of the two uncanceled Marvel series on Netflix, teaming up with The Punisher (Joe Bernthal) or Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) to finish off Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) once and for all.
