Conservatories remain as popular as ever with a range of designs

But there’s been a big shift in fashion when it comes to their design.

Those with big budgets will still opt for traditional styles but others may consider the new trend for “glass box” rooms with sliding doors.

“Well-constructed attractive wooden orangeries or slate roofed sunrooms appear on the wish list of the majority of our clients,” says Carol Peett, of West Wales Property Finders (01834 862816; westwalespropertyfinders.co.uk).

“They add value as they are far more flexible and useable year-round.”

Carol adds that some conventional uPVC conservatories can actually put off buyers.

“This is a major change from 12 years ago when a conservatory was on people’s wish list and uPVC was often favoured for its durability.”

Steve Bromberg of Express Bi-folding Doors (0333 271 2147; expressbifolds.co.uk) says glass-box style rooms are becoming more popular and people are attempting to get more use out of them by retro-fitting solid roofs or replacing them with something more modern.

“Glass boxes are more contemporary and incorporating sliding and bi-folding doors allows for a more flexible space and better views out to the garden.”

But the quality of the glass used for any style of conservatory is crucial. IQ Glass 01494 722880; iqglassuk.com) recommends heated glass with tinting and solar protection plus a low maintenance coating.
