Chuck Berry dead at 90: Watch star perform iconic song Johnny B. Goode

Johnny B. Goode was one of the singer’s most famous hits, which he originally wrote in 1955.

As fans and celebrities alike pay tribute to the star, here is Chuck’s rendition of Johnny B. Goode from a televised performance from 1964.

The song is about an illiterate “country boy” from New Orleans who aspires to be famous one day for his music.

Berry performed the hit at a two-day concert in the mid-1960s held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

The event also saw performances from Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones.

As well as Johnny B. Goode, Berry also had massive hits with My Ding-a-Ling, Roll Over Beethoven and Brown Eyed Handsome Man.

His music surpassed the racial divides of America at a time of tension and segregation, he said to the New York Times in 2003: “I made records for people who would buy them. No color, no ethnic, no political — I don’t want that, never did.”

He had many fans in the world of music including Beatles star John Lennon, who said of him: “If you gave rock ‘n’ roll another name, it would be Chuck Berry.”

The star was set to be making a comeback after it was announced on his 90th birthday in October last year that he would be releasing his first record in 38 years.

The album is set to be released later this year and was dedicated to his wife Themetta “Toddy” Berry, whom he is survived by.
