The acclaimed actress teams up with Sofia Boutella for the sex sequence, which has been teased in the film’s trailers.
“I just loved it,” she told Variety. “For so many reasons: My frustration of how that community is represented in cinema, or lack thereof. And also, it made perfect sense.
“It just suited her. It just felt there was a way through that relationship and the fact that it was a same-sex relationship to show a woman not having to fall in love, which is one of those female tropes.
“‘It’s a woman; she better fall in love—otherwise, she’s a w***e!’”
Theron, it is noted, developed that aspect of the story with writer Kurt Johnstad, something she is very pleased with.
“It’s one of my most proudest parts of the development, when we came up with that,” she admitted.
“And then finding Sofia, that was a slam dunk. There’s something about her that’s so broken and vulnerable. It works.”
Earlier this week, Theron spoke less favourably about another of her movies.
Aeon Flux was a big flop in 2005, but she doesn’t sound too cut-up by it now.
“I really loved [director] Karyn Kusama’s movie [Girlfight],” she reasoned.
“So I threw myself into that with the belief that she’s a great filmmaker.
“And then we f**ked it all up. I just don’t think we really knew how to execute it.”
