Casualty spoilers: Soap star reveals huge behind-the-scenes BBC secret

George Rainsford, who plays Ethan Hardy in the show, revealed the true secret to keeping Casualty a success after 32 years.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, George explained: “Casualty has been around for 32 years so it keeps challenging itself.

“It keeps challenging the viewers and keeps producing big stories which people can relate to, hopefully.”

He noted: “It keeps championing the .”

George’s character Ethan started as a consultant who in the emergency department of Holby City Hospital in 2014.

Following Connie Beauchamp’s (played by Amanda Mealing) return in mid-2018, Ethan became Deputy Clinical Lead of the department, continuing as a consultant at the same time.

Revealing what fans of the show say to him in real life, George laughed that medical professionals tease him about his lack of knowledge.

He chuckled: “I play Ethan in the show. When nurses and doctors come up to me in the street they give me advice like how to give CPR better. Or ‘You had the stethoscope on wrong’.”

Last night’s continuation of the soap saw paramedic Sam Nicholls (Charlotte Salt) die from a serious shrapnel injury.

Her death came after a tanker explosion tore up the motorway.

Sam’s colleague Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) was forced to swerve the ambulance after a girl made a suicide attempt from the overpass.

Ruby Spark (Maddy Hill) and Alicia Munroe (Chelsea Halfpenny) were left trapped in the back of the ambulance after the vehicle overturned.

Sam realised she was bleeding from the liver before collapsing and dying in the back of an ambulance.

Will Iain manage to move on professionally, or will he blame himself for Sam’s death?

Taking to Twitter ahead of last night’s episode, actor George revealed several endings were recorded in order to keep the plot a secret.

He posted: “All jokes aside we actually filmed 72 different endings for tonight’s #Casualty season opener, including a musical one, so none of us know what’s going to happen. #prayforDervla.”

He later added: “Also bless you all (including some press) who thought I genuinely didn’t know which of the characters (including me!) was going to die in the episode!

“I’ve been filming for the past 5 months! #72differentendings #Casualty3006.”

Casualty continues on Saturday on One at 8.40pm.
