Broadchurch finale holds surprises and heartache says writer

The third and final series draws to a close tomorrow on Easter Monday when viewers hope to learn who raped Trish Winterman.

The show’s writer Chris Chibnall said the conclusion will have “some surprises”, and added that he hoped it would also be “satisfying”.

“Sitting down to write the final episode was very emotional and I admit I actually had a bit of a weep doing it,” he said.

“There is pressure with every script, but I am really proud of the final episode.”

For the past eight weeks viewers have watched police duo Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) and Alec Hardy (David Tennant) trying to whittle down the list of suspects after the attack on Trish (former Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh).

The reveal of the “whodunnit” has been so closely guarded that not even Chibnall’s family know the identity of Trish’s rapist.

The show’s two leading stars Colman and Tennant – also weren’t told who it was until they saw the script for the final episode.

Chibnall revealed: “There was an early conversation with the guilty party, but David and Olivia didn’t know and neither did Julie.”

Earlier this week, Mark Bazeley, who plays love cheat Jim Atwood, said he thought that only the actor playing the villain was told in advance who the guilty partner was.

Bazeley said that he had played Bob Simms in Home Fires, a villain who physically and emotionally dominates his wife.

This had led to comment outside the show, he revealed. Asked if people had hated him because of the character, he said: “Yes. It was tough collecting my kids for a while at the school playground, as you can imagine and, obviously, now with Broadchurch the suspicion lies there again.”

Other suspects in the frame include Sir Lenny Henry, who plays Ed Burnett, Trish’s old boss, and also her estranged husband Ian played by Charlie Higson.

● The finale is on tomorrow at 9pm on ITV.
