Viewers saw the robot sing along to Take On Me earlier on in the series, but they weren’t expecting him to be in the running to perform at this year’s Royal Variety Performance, as the finalists were announced at the end of last night’s episode.
The likes of The Missing People’s Choir and eight-year-old magician Issy Simpson have bagged themselves a spot in the live shows, but fans immediately took to Twitter to slam the judges – Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams – when they confirmed that the robot would be joining them on that stage.
One person raged: “I understand that it’s a tv show and therefore prioritises entertainment but how can Britain’s Got Talent put through an incompetent robot?”
“@BGT I’m not impressed that big robot got put through, it stands absolutely no chance,” a second screamed.
A third ranted: “The robot shouldn’t be in semi-finals. And it’s annoying David flirts and makes sexual innuendos towards Simon on every show, time to stop.”
“@BGT can’t believe we lost good talent for a stupid robot & a boy who was rude NOT funny! Now that’s a joke,” yet another slammed.
A further social networker asked: “How the hell did the #Robot get through???? #BGT”
“They sent that pathetic robot through. #whatever #BGT,” one disgruntled viewer moaned.
Yesterday’s instalment also saw Simon suggest that, in future, he should do the show alone with dozens of holograms of himself as a backdrop.
Speaking to traditional Irish dancing act David Geaney, the media mogul said: “I think the idea was better than the execution. But I love the idea that you only need one of you and everyone else can be like holograms.”
The first Britain’s Got Talent live semi-final kicks off tomorrow at 7.30pm on ITV.
