Britain’s Got Talent: Simon Cowell wants to STOP public from voting acts through to final

In this year’s series of the ITV show, the judges no longer had the power to vote for which acts went through to the final, meaning the top two semi-final performance were selected by public vote alone.

However, the shock twist appeared to have back-fired as Simon’s favourites were axed from last weekend’s final.

“I don’t know who made the decision about the judges not having the casting vote. I do think it will be the last time we do it as I do think we had some say in the first stage and I think you have to be consistent.” Simon told The Daily Star.

He added: “It is always worth trying new things but next year we will probably go back to what we normally do.”

In previous years, the act which had the most votes from the public got an automatic pass whereas those who came in second and third place faced a deliberation from the judges.

And Simon, 57, thinks the public vote very differently compared to himself and fellow judges Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams.

He continued: “The public tend to go with their heart on these shows. The contestants trust the show and they think they can get something out of it. But if you are not going to get anything out of it that is when the standard drops.”

On Saturday night, pianist Tokio Myers scooped the top prize of £250,000 and will perform at this year’s Royal Variety Performance.

But one of the music moguls’ favourites in this year’s competition was his golden buzzer act Sarah Ikumu who didn’t get enough votes from the public to secure a place in the final show.

Talking about her future, he said: “I think Sarah needs to go into a West End show and get some experience. She is too young at the moment to go straight into a recording contract. It is important how we help these young kids.”

Simon Cowell will be back on screens on X Factor on ITV in August.
