Bodyguard on BBC cast: Who stars in BBC series Bodyguard?

Bodyguard, the brand new thriller series on BBC One will start tonight at 9pm (Sunday, August 26).

Episode two will air tomorrow evening at  9pm (Monday, August 27). The remaining four episodes in the six-part series will air every Sunday at 9pm on BBC One. Episodes will also be available to stream and download via BBC player for free. 

The official BBC synopsis for Bodyguard reads: The official BBC synopsis reads: “Set in and around the corridors of power, Bodyguard tells the fictional story of David Budd (played by Richard Madden), a heroic but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch (RaSP) of London’s Metropolitan Police Service.

“When he is assigned to protect the ambitious and powerful Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), Budd finds himself torn between his duty and his beliefs. Responsible for her safety, could he become her biggest threat?”

Who stars in Bodyguard on BBC One?

Richard Madden

Richard Madden plays Bodyguards lead character, David Budd. David is a war veteran and Specialist Protection Officer of the MET Police who is assigned to be the Home Secretary, Julia Montague’s bodyguard.

Madden is best recognised as Robb Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones and as Prince Kit in the recent Disney adaptation of Cinderella.

Madden said of his character: “I was fascinated with David being a series of different characters within himself. He has a sense of duty and also a political history because he’s a former soldier who’s been in Afghanistan and has been in Iraq.”

Keeley Hawes

Keeley Hawes plays fictional Home Secretary Julia Montague. Julia is a not very popular, controversial politician.

Hawes is best known for playing Alex Drake on Ashes to Ashes and most recently as Detective Lindsay Denton in Line of Duty. She has also had notable roles in the BBC series The Missing and as Louisa Durrell in ITV’s the Durrells.

Hawes described her character as: “hugely ambitious woman and incredibly bright. She got into politics for all the right reasons… to make the right changes. She’s strong but she’s also flawed. She’s kind of damage – she’s divorced, vulnerable, and she’s in such a tense and high-power, high-profile job as a cabinet minister.”

Sophie Rundle

Sophie Rundle plays David Budd’s wife, Vicky. Vicky and David are separated due to his mood swings and the effects of his PTSD. They have two children together who they both love dearly.

Rundle is best known as Ada Shelby in BBC’s Peaky Blinders. She has also starred as Lucy in the original The Bletchley Circle as a Labia in Episodes.

Gina McKee

Gina Mckee plays Commander Anne Sampson, the head of the Metropolitan Police Counter-Terrorism Command. Anne reports to the Home Secretary Julia Montague.

McKee is a BAFTA award-winning actress for her role in Our Friends in the North She has also had notable roles in The Lost Prince, The Street, Notting Hill and Phantom Thread.

HOW MANY ARE EPISODES IN BODYGUARD?

Vincent Franklin

Vincent Franklin plays Mike Travis, the Minister of State for Counter-Terrorism. Mike becomes increasingly suspicious of Julia after he is left out of private meetings with the Director General of the Security Service.

Franklin has had many roles in film and television including The Bourne Identity, The Illusionist, The Office, The Thick of It and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.

Nicholas Gleaves

Nicholas Gleaves stars as MP Roger Penhaligon, the Government Chief Whip and ex-husband of Julia Montague. Roger is on a mission to stop his ex-wife from taking advantage of the current PM’s weak position in government.

Gleaves has many television credits to his name including Casualty, Soldier Soldier, Scott & Bailey, Cold Feet and City Lights.

Nina Toussaint-White

Nina Toussaint-White stars as Detective Sergeant Louise Rayburn. She is a counterterrorism officer who is described as “tenacious and sharp”.

Toussaint-White is most recognisable as Angie Bailey in Emmerdale and as Syd Chambers in Eastenders.

Stephanie Hyam, Pippa Haywood, Stuart Bowman, Ash Tandon, Paul Ready and Shubham Saraf, also star in Bodyguard.
