I love fast SUVs. If we can’t get wagons or hatchbacks, at least make these pseudo replacements interesting. The all-new 2018 BMW X3 already has a hot M40i variant, but, based on these spy shots, it looks like the M division is giving it the full go. This X3 was spied in Europe and looks far more aggressive than the already sporty X3 M40i. If it’s anything like the current BMW X5 M, expect big power and short 0-60 mph times. I can’t wait.
The X3 M wears new front and rear fascias, lightly covered with a camouflage wrap. All the requisite M-design cues are there, from the big intakes at the corners of the front bumper to the quad exhaust tips out back. As expected, the wheels and brakes look larger than the M40i. It’s difficult to tell if the suspension has been altered, but expect the final product to sit much lower than the stock car.
Since the X3 shares a number of parts with the BMW 3 Series, expect the X3 M to share parts with the M3, including the engine. If it’s anything like the X5 M, the X3 M’s turbocharged inline-six could make substantially more power than the M3. With all-wheel drive, we could see sub-four-second 0-60 mph times. Look for a full reveal in the next few months.
