BlackBerry Mercury release – Why fans are about to see something very 'different'

Blackberry looks set for an extremely productive 2017.

The Canadian handset maker has endured a chequered last few years as it has made the transition from one of the world’s most successful device manufacturers to a company focused largely on software production.

BlackBerry is now set to welcome a new era for the company, as it licenses its technology and brand name to other firms, with the this weekend at Mobile World Congress.

So what does the future hold for the new BlackBerry?

For one thing, it seems the company is dead set on expanding beyond smartphones.

“Blackberry is no longer just about the smartphone, but the smart in the phone”, Alex Thurber, BlackBerry’s new Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobility Solutions told Express.co.uk.

The “new BlackBerry” is looking more at safeguarding the growing number of network connections across the world, and ensuring that the growing number of smart, connected devices remains secure and productive.

But if you’re determined to own a new BlackBerry smartphone, don’t worry – you won’t have long to wait.

Thurber. who says he has been using a new BlackBerry Mercury device for several weeks, says that fans of the company’s past devices are in for a treat.

“Its a very slick device,” he says, “I think people are going to be really excited about this (BlackBerry Mercury) – it’s a really cool, fun and productive device.”

The BlackBerry Mercury is set to be the company’s most powerful smartphone to date, featuring improved hardware alongside an all-new design that blends a curved metal build with the classic QWERTY keyboard.

But it will also include Android 7.0 Nougat, making it the first BlackBerry device to run Google’s latest software out of the box.

Thurber is keen to sing the praises of Android 7.0 Nougat, and the ease of which the platform has blended with BlackBerry’s own software offerings.

“Google is great,” he notes, “we’ve been working very closely with them over the past few years…and the team is very excited about using Nougat”

The power of Android 7.0 Nougat has also meant that BlackBerry has been able to expand a number of its own software services and apps, which will most likely get an outing in the new BlackBerry Mercury device.

Thurber notes that the new software will include a new note-taking app service as well as an update to the DTEK security app to provide more privacy for both consumer and business users.

It’s clear the company is changing its ongoing strategy, which will now all be about licensing its software and working with partnerships new and old around the world.

Going forward, Thurber says that this strategy will result in a number of new potential partnerships, all currently in the pipeline.

“You’re going to see more and different (BlackBerry) phones than you have in the past,” he notes, adding we  will “Absolutely” continue to see new partnerships -including Western markets coming soon.”

“We truly believe BlackBerry is back – and every one of our employees agree with us”
