The latest Marvel movie has become only the 33rd film to make more than $ 1 billion globally, not to mention Disney’s 16th and Marvel’s fifth.
Before marketing the film cost a whopping $ 200 million, but the response from audiences has certainly paid off.
In terms of its US success, Black Panther has made $ 521 million domestically, the ninth film to do, and after three weeks at No 1 it looks like it might just be able to hold off Disney’s next entry – A Wrinkle In Time.
Assuming the Marvel movie makes its predicted $ 37 million this weekend, it will become the second biggest superhero release, topping The Dark Knight’s US run.
Meanwhile Variety reports Black Panther is set for success internationally, with a Chinese opening expected to bring the international total to over $ 500 million.
As for Black Panther’s final global total, the question is whether it can top the other billion dollar Marvel movies: Avengers 1 and 2, Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3.
Having beaten Star Wars The Last Jedi’s opening, the film could certainly enter the Top 10 highest grossing films of all time, challenging Avengers Assemble and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Then begs the question: Can Avengers Infinity War beat Black Panther?
What is set to be the biggest superhero movie of all time in terms of character is in doubt as to whether it can beat the original Avengers movie’s $ 1.5 billion total gross, meaning anything’s possible for Black Panther.
Avengers Infinity War is released in UK cinemas on April 26, 2018.
