The morning show was discussing how to wash your hands correctly when the presenter demonstrated just how long it should take.
Charlie, 55, branded his co-host “embarrassing” as she belted out Happy Birthday not once but twice, after it was revealed how long a thorough clean takes.
“People need to wash their hands for a full 20 seconds, that’s to get rid of viruses and bacteria that can cause colds, flu and upset stomachs, that is according to the royal pharmaceutical society,” the broadcaster had started.
Naga, 42, then continued: “We did sing it, apologies for the singing, but this is just how long 20 seconds is.”
It was then a clip was shown of her and two colleagues belting out the tune, while Charlie washed his hands live in the studio.
He admitted: “Now, aside from the slightly embarrassing issue of the singing there… that did feel like an extremely long time.”
Many watching took to Twitter to agree and comment on the “awkward” moment, with one user remarking: “Wow BBC Breakfast getting really painful to watch. Did anyone see the hand-washing Happy Birthday piece?”
Someone else agreed: “#bbcbreakfast sorry, couldn’t bear awkward, cringing Naga any longer, switched to GMTV.”(sic)
A third posted: “And now prime morning UK news show #bbcbreakfast is showing us how to wash our hands whilst singing Happy Birthday. Save it for CBeebies!”
BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
