BAFTAs 2017: Meryl Streep 'overrated'! Stephen Fry joins Donald Trump's digs at actress

Rather than slating the popular actress, comedian and host Fry was poking fun at the President of the United States’ behaviour.

Entering the stage at the start of the evening, he said: “I look down on row after row of the most overrated people on the planet in their beautiful borrowed evening wear.”

Meryl, 67, was seen laughing and clapping along at the gag.

Fry later called her “one of the greatest actresses of all time, only a blithering idiot would think otherwise”.

“I want to call you Dame Meryl because if you were British you would have been damed five times over,” he said as he went to greet her.

As Meryl rose from her seat, she could be heard whispering in his ear: “Thank you, I am so thrilled.”

It was one of the first politically-charged moments of the night, with I, Daniel Blake director Ken Loach also taking aim at the UK’s government as he collected Best British Film.

Big winners tonight included the likes of La La Land, Emma Stone, Dev Patel Viola Davis and Casey Affleck, with Damien Chazelle taking Best Director.

Tom Holland was also crowned EE Rising Star.
