Bafta TV Awards: Sue Perkins SLAMMED for ‘inappropriate’ Theresa May dig ‘We don't care'

The former Great British Bake Off star made her feelings about the upcoming general election crystal clear as she mocked the Prime Minister and the catchphrase which has defined the leadership race already.

She began: “I know what you’re thinking, ‘Not another woman hosting an awards show, when will it end?

“Whatever happens, I promise to deliver you a strong and stable Baftas.”

The swipe got several smirks from the star-studded audience, but divided the audience at home.

“Three shots in my awards show political speeches drinking game already! Oh boy this will be long, especially with this,” sighed one audience member, as another moaned: “Pls refrain from using this event to spout political propaganda. It’s not appropriate & we don’t care what u think.”

A third hissed: “What a surprise, another awards show, the political bollocks has already started.”

One particularly disgruntled viewer complained: “All these luvvie p***ks make me puke  #BAFTATV.”

Though, for every critic there were other applauding the comic for her political allegiance.

“‘A strong and stable awards show’,” chuckled one fan, as another beamed: “Perkins already mocking #strongandstable My hero #BAFTATV.”

One more giggled: “Ooh, swipe at Theresa May already, haha #BAFTATV.”

Opening tonight’s ceremony, Sue, 47, celebrated a Great British Bake Off reunion with Mary Berry, 82, as they got stuck into a game of strip poker.

The Bafta Television Awards is available to watch on BBC iPlayer now.
