Avios points travel scheme to CLOSE – and you only have this long to use them by

Avios points can help frequent travellers save money when booking flights, thanks to the reductions they can offer.

Through the Avios Travel Rewards Programme, points can be built up when spending on certain credit cards and used for flights and hotels.

Yet the popular points scheme is to close down this summer, with it being consolidated into the British Airways Executive Club.

This is expected to take place by July 2018, just a few months away.

Can members still use their points and how long do they have to use them?

What will happen to my Avios points?

The Travel Rewards scheme is closing as the “consolidation will improve collection and spending opportunities, simplify the customer experience and be more attractive to current and future Avios partners,” according to Chris Treadwell, Avios commercial director.

Members can choose to switch to the other scheme which is currently on offer which is the BA Executive Club.

The points will stay the same and be offered for the same value.

This means all points can be moved and will not be lost, with Avios seeking to contact all members over the next few months.

For those worrying, there will be “very little change” for those who move, says Treadwell.

What if I don’t want to switch?

Anyone not wanting to be part of the scheme will need to opt out by May 20.

From the date they opt out, they will have six months to spend the points before they are invalidated.

Treadwell reassures that it is “good news for members” as “outwardly there will be very little change.”

How and where can the points be collected?

By being part of the new scheme, 12 other airlines including as Qatar, Qantas, American Airlines and Cathay Pacific can be used to earn and spend points, which are not currently included.

Points collected with a Lloyds, TSB or Tesco will stay the same with the new account.

The scheme was created in 2011, although how much the points were worth was decreased in 2015 by British Airways.

It depends on what they are being spent on but most points are worth at least 1p.

Tesco Clubcard vouchers can be exchanged for Avios points, with rates of £2.50 for 600 points.

An example is a London to Rome flight costing 18,000 Avios points.

Yet to accumulate this, it would mean spending £9,000 on fuel and shopping.
