Andrew Smyth: Celebrity Traveller

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE HOLIDAY? In 2015, I went to New Zealand with my parents for three weeks. It was absolutely incredible.

We started on the South Island and drove up to Auckland on the North Island stopping off along the way.

You’ll be in what feels like jungle one day yet elsewhere you’ve got sandy beaches, mountain peaks and fjords. It’s a little bit of everywhere on earth in one place.

It was like a film and, yes, we went to Hobbiton, the remains of the set for The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit.

We also went to Milford Sound, a stunning valley cut by glaciers, and Queenstown which is a bit of an adrenaline place. We did jet boating and bungee jumping.

They have a vibrant food and drink scene too. The meat was incredible.

AND YOUR WORST? The south of when I was very young. Our hire car broke down at the side of the road. It was outrageously hot, the car had no air con and we were stuck for hours.

FAVOURITE SOUVENIR? I have a collection of shot glasses. You can tuck them away in your luggage and they don’t take up much room in the cupboard at home. I choose ones with local scenes… the tackier the better.

BEST HOLIDAY READ? I like a John Grisham novel and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series of books by Stieg Larsson was one I buried myself in on holiday.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME ON HOLIDAY? I’m flexible. I like active holidays but equally appreciate some R&R. I’m happy to have a week on a beach with a book but I’m as happy racing down a mountain skiing. We went to Split in Croatia last year. We swam, and went whitewater rafting and cross-country quad biking.

In New Zealand, everyone but my mum tried bungee jumping. It was great fun. We’ve done the tallest bridge bungee in the world at Bloukrans Bridge in South Africa too.

WHERE WOULD YOU REVISIT? I’d love to go back to New Zealand. The people were so friendly and there was so much we didn’t get chance to explore. It’s a treasure trove. You could keep going back.

WHERE NEXT? I’d love to visit Brazil and Uruguay – it’d be a good blend of seeing the culture of the city but also the beach, mountains and water.
