American Gods Stars Preview Shadow and Laura's Fraught Reunion

American Gods‘ upcoming reunion of Shadow Moon and his very own corpse bride, Laura, is just about as romantic/troubling as you’d expect, Ricky Whittle tells TVLine.

“They finally meet and they finally have this conversation, and it’s one of my favorite moments of the first season,” the actor says of a scene in this Sunday’s episode (Starz, 9/8c). “It’s a beautiful moment where you have two lovers talking about a situation. You see the hurt and the history there. You understand where all his pain comes from — and you see it released — but you forget the most important thing.” He chuckles. “One of them is dead.”

Indeed, as those who watched last week’s hour are aware, you can stitch Mrs. Moon’s arm back on and paint her like one of the living, but the truth remains: Emily Browning‘s character is 100 percent dead, without any hope on the horizon of her status being reversed. Plus, as Browning and Whittle foreshadow, there’s that slight matter of the NSFW way Laura died (and who she was with when it happened), and the fact that they’d been separated by Shadow’s prison sentence for years before her death.

“This is the moment you’ve been waiting two episodes for, and it’s delivered to you and delivered beautifully,” Whittle previews. “The way it was shot was fantastic. I don’t like watching myself, but when he finally talks to Laura, there’s some really beautiful moments in there before something crazy happens, and Shadow is torn away.”

Browning adds, “It perhaps doesn’t go as well as Laura had hoped. It probably could have gone better if Laura had some awareness of Shadow’s feelings, which she doesn’t.”

Oh, and one more thing?  “I don’t know if it’s too much of a spoiler, but they are together very briefly,” Browning says, “and then they’re apart for a long time again.”
