Land Rover announces new 4-cylinder engines for Discovery Sport, Evoque

Land Rover has announced its Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque models will receive new Ingenium four-cylinder gasoline turbo engines for 2018. While there have been more cylinders on offer in Land Rover history, the more powerful variant of these four-bangers offers the most horsepower seen in either the Discovery Sport or the Evoque, at 286 hp. It is only 10 horsepower down from the 2.0 turbo offered in the Jaguar E-Pace. Both SUVs here will benefit from a “dynamic” bodykit when specified with the more powerful engine, to differentiate them from the lesser but also new 237-horsepower version. The transmission is a nine-speed ZF unit.

The new all-aluminum engine has a twin-scroll turbocharger, and the turbo in the 286hp variant is a ball-bearing one. In both cases, the cylinder head is one piece with the exhaust manifold, a first for JLR. The manufacturer notes that this method shortens the engine’s warm-up time, improving efficiency and reducing emissions. There is also a new direct injection system with centrally mounted injectors; inlet valves are electro-hydraulically controlled with variable valve lift. Between the two engine variants, estimated fuel economy is near-identical with both Discovery Sport versions reaching 25 mpg highway and 21/20 city; the Evoque manages 29 mpg in highway driving no matter which engine is specified, but in city driving the lesser engine reaches 22 mpg, the 286 hp engine 21. The drop-top Evoque is only available with the 237 horsepower engine.
