A massive forest blaze is raging on the holiday island of Gran Canaria as hundreds of firefighters work to contain flames of up to 25ft.
The fire was “neither controlled or stabilised” in an official update at 8am.
Over 300 firefighters have been trying to control the flames as at least 800 people are forced to flee their homes.
The blaze has already affected 2,000 hectares, having been fanned by strong wind and dry conditions.
Luxury hotel Tejeda Parador suffered damage to its grounds just inches from the bedrooms. It was evacuated before the flames advanced.
The UK’s Foreign Office (FCO) has updated its travel advice for tourists in the popular holiday region.
It said: “Forest fires are currently affecting a popular mountainous area in the centre of Gran Canaria causing evacuations and road closures.
“Areas affected include Tejeda, San Mateo, Telde, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Santa Lucia de Tirajana.
“You should follow the advice of the local authorities.”
Two social centres have been made available in preparation for taking around 100 displaced families.
A level two emergency has been declared because of strong winds fanning the fire.
An urgent appeal was made to anyone who has a home in the area to leave immediately, particularly in the districts of Cruz, Lagunetas, Cueva Grande and Caleteras.
