Post-Brexit passports: Britons applying for IRISH passports as applications up 50 per cent

Post-Brexit reports have found that more people living in the UK have been applying for citizenships in other countries.

This is due to many wanting to retain some of the EU laws and regulations.

From Germany to Switzerland, Britons are choosing a variety of countries to gain dual-citizenships.

Yet many are choosing somewhere a lot closer to home.

A huge 50 per cent increase for Irish passports has been reported by Ireland’s foreign ministry earlier this week.

Over 500,000 Irish passports have been issued so far this year in light of the recent Brexit vote as it is one of the 27 states in the EU.

This comes in light of last years figure of 733,000 passports issued, which could be overtaken if the surge continues.

Anyone who lives in Northern Ireland is eligible for an Irish passport.

However, Britons who don’t live there must have a family relative who is Irish to be eligible.

Luckily, the high demand has been met with a new online system that was rolled out in March.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney stated: “Online renewals now account for almost 17 per cent of all applications, well ahead of initial projections.

“The target turnaround time for online renewal is ten working days plus postage.

“In actual fact, 90 per cent of online applications are currently being processed within just five working days.”
