The Ford Explorer–based Police Interceptor Utility has been outselling the Taurus-based Interceptor for some time now, so it should come as no surprise that Ford also offers an even larger, Expedition-based police vehicle. Based on the redesigned 2018 Ford Expedition, here is the Expedition SSV (Special Service Vehicle).

Modifications for police duty include a higher-output alternator, an electronic limited-slip differential in the rear, a single rear bench in place of the standard Expedition’s eight-seat layout, and vinyl flooring and upholstery in the back—no cushy quilted leather for the perps. It also does away with the new console-mounted rotary shift knob in favor of a good old-fashioned column shifter. The Expedition SSV otherwise shares its new aluminum body, twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6, and 10-speed automatic transmission with the civilian model.

Ford is also showing off an updated version of the F-150 SSV pickup, which gets similar visual updates to the standard 2018 F-series lineup. It’s available with either the EcoBoost V-6 or the same updated 5.0-liter V-8 offered in the standard truck, both paired with the 10-speed automatic.
