Hotels to remove free toiletries in the room – and replace them with this instead

Hotel toiletries are one of the few things in the room that are free to take.

Over half of guests have previously admitted that they have taken something from the hotel.

Bottles of shampoo and body wash can’t be re-used so hotels often are okay with guests taken them home with them as a memento.

Yet a few chains are beginning to remove them altogether, meaning they can’t be sneaked into a suitcase when leaving.

They are replacing them for a good reason environmentally.

Hotel chain Marriott and InterContinental are removing the free toiletries due to the waste the small plastic bottles create.

In a bid to protect the environment, they are phasing them out from their hotels.

They won’t leave guests empty handed and use something else as of a better way to reduce the plastic rubbish.

Instead, they will use larger bottles that are attached the walls, not unlike ones used over sinks for hand wash.

These will then be refilled and will save a lot by removing the disposable bottles.

A Marriott spokesperson told MailOnline that an average hotel goes through over 23,000 small bottles a year.

InterContinental Hotels spokeswoman Ada Hatzios confirmed that guests prefer having more product for the sake of removing the toiletries.

She told LA Times: “They love the in-shower, wall-mounted fixtures, easy-to-read labels, the well-known shampoo and bath brands, and having larger quantity of products.”

Marriott has introduced the larger bottles to 450 of their hotels and InterContinental is rolling it out to four of their brands.

With many mini bottles less than 1oz, the new bottles will be over 8oz so guests won’t need to be thrifty when using it in the shower.

What items can be stolen from the hotel room without risking being charged?

Along with toiletries, the free tea and coffee can also be taken.

Anything that cannot be reused is allowed to be put into a suitcase, so this includes the free hotel slippers too.

Towels and dressing gowns are a big no-no when it comes to taking them home.

Guests who try to sneak them away could face a credit card bill from the hotel.
