easyJet pilot is the youngest female captain in the WORLD – and reveals this industry fact

easyJet pilot Kate McWilliams is the youngest female captain in the world.

At just 26-years-old, she became the youngest when she became a captain with easyJet.

She began training at the age of 19 when she built up her flying career in New Zealand.

By 21, she had joined easyJet as First Officer and became a captain five years later.

She has since revealed her journey to become a captain.

Speaking to Business Insider, the amazing journey is a surprising one due to the lack of females as airline pilots. Just three per cent of pilots in the world are female.

Ms McWilliams explained how her love of the aviation industry began as a child.

She realised pilots were often men and “assumed there were no female pilots, so I didn’t consider it as my career”.

Thankfully, after joining the Royal Air Force at 13-years old, she realised that flying was an option and joined CTC Aviation, which trains people for commercial flights.

Whilst she didn’t need A Levels to join, the course most similar to hers costs a whopping £96,800.

She has been with easyJet for over seven years, flying from Gatwick Airport to over 100 destinations.

Despite working difficult hours and having sporadic days off, she admits: “I don’t feel like I have a job, I just have a really fun hobby that I get paid to do.”

She has managed to travel to a number of destinations on her journey, including France, Croatia and Italy, with easyJet’s destinations mainly in Europe.

The young pilot shows off some of the most beautiful parts of her career on her Instagram account “_captain.kate_”.

Using the hashtag #girlswhofly, she hopes to help other women realise there is a career for them in aviation.

She explained: “I spend a lot of time visiting schools to talk to youngsters, both male and female, about gender stereotypes and encourage them to look at career options that they may not have previously considered.”

The oldest flight attendant in the world has revealed how flying has changed since she joined the industry in 1957.
