The safest cities in the world have been revealed as part of a study investigating smart cities.
Analysing 20 cities, the Global Smart City Performance Index investigated four core elements; mobility, health, safety and productivity.
Public safety was investigated by looking at crime levels, mortality and law enforcement services.
But does the UK make the list for the safest city in the world?
Singapore took the number one spot for the safest city in the world, as well as for the other three elements.
The study stated that the city had begun to trial “smart video surveillance to detect criminal activity,” something that can help reduce crime.
There are no major travel warnings to the country, with the only threats reported from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) being air quality and the Zika virus.
Coming in second was New York, which the study found had “worked hard over the last 25 years to address what was an epidemic of violent crime,” and was once known as the “murder capital” of the USA.
By using crime hot-spots, they could work on increasing the “public safety” of each area.
The efforts made by law enforcement and fire departments by using predictive modelling for crimes has also been imitated by Chicago, which followed closely behind for safety.
London made it into the top ten but was beaten by Seoul, Dubai and Tokyo.
The study reports: “A Smart City is an urban ecosystem that places emphasis on the use of digital technology, shared knowledge and cohesive processes to underpin citizen benefits in vectors such as mobility, public safety, health and productivity.”
“Improvements in public safety; in particular emergency response, can have substantial time-benefits for citizens.”
