8 Things That Happen To Your Body When You Kick The Diet Soda Habit

Congratulations, you decided to kick the diet soda habit, for good. Many people have chosen to put the calorie-free bubbly drink aside after learning the health risk of continuing to drink the substance. Maybe you tried to read the ingredients and was shocked to realize that you cannot pronounce any of the names. Surely, if cannot say it–it can’t be good for you, right?

The reason you decided to ditch the diet soda isn’t important. What matters is you will benefit from the decision from head to toe. Research on the effects of diet soda is limited, and it isn’t know how long-term use of it could affect your health–so it is wise to flush it out of your diet, for good.

Below are five things that happen in your body when you remove diet soda from your daily diet.

Migraines Disappear

We’ve all been there–you swear off diet soda and prepare yourself for awful headaches for a few days. After a few days, the caffeine headache goes away, and you will realize that your migraines will disappear too. And, that’s not the only perk—you may start to be able to focus better than you have in years. Apparently, there’s a reason diet soda affects your brain function. It alters your brain chemicals which affect your brain signals which can lead to headaches, anxiety, and insomnia. It can even change your fine and gross motor skills.

Food Taste Good

Ever wonder why diet soda drinkers sometimes admit they could live on nothing but their bubbly drink? That is because it makes food taste bland and makes the users crave it. When you decide to drop the soda habit, food starts to taste good, again.

Researchers found that artificial sweeteners overwhelm your taste buds, being over 200 times sweeter than sugar cane. The recommended replacement, Splenda is even more sweet, ranking in at 600 times sweeter than table sugar.

“We often see patients change snack choices when they give up diet soda. Rather than needing sugary treats or something really salty like pretzels and chips, they reach for an apple and a piece of cheese. And, when they try diet soda again, they find it intolerably sweet.”

Weight Loss

Have you ever tried to lose weight for a few months, and nothing you do shows up on the scale? You exercise, watch your diet, and make sure you are getting enough sleep. The only thing you don’t watch is your diet soda intake. You figure, it is calorie free–it surely wouldn’t cause weight gain, right?

A recent study published in Prevention magazine reports that diet soda drinkers were 65 percent more likely to pack on belly fat than those who drank regular soda. Not only that, diet soda greatly increased your odds of becoming obese (within the next decade) and developing high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.

Attitude Towards Food Changes

Diet experts claim that their patients often report they have a poor diet because they feel that since diet soda is calorie-free, they can afford the “extra calories.” They often indulge in foods such as burger and fries, cake, pies, and potato chips, Health reports.

“Sometimes those poor choices are built up habits. You’re conditioned to have soda with chips, fries, or something sweet. When you eliminate the soft drink, you also break the junk food habit.”

Kidney Function Improves

Drinking diet soda increases your risk of developing a kidney infection or stones. Nothing is more painful than a kidney stone, and if you ever had one, you’d do anything to avoid the pain. Just days after kicking the soda habit, your body will start to flush the toxins out of your body. An 11-year study found that just two soda servings a day increase your odds of developing a decrease in kidney function.
