With so many competitors jostling for position in the compact class, the Kia Forte and its hatchback variant, the Forte5, fade into the background—but not because they’re bad cars. Both offer acceptable driving dynamics and mature exterior designs. The Forte5 can be pumped up with an optional, spunky 201-hp turbocharged powertrain that outruns all of the competitors tested here. Kia’s UVO3 infotainment suite makes it easy for buyers to spec Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in their cars. But the Forte and Forte5 ultimately fail to transcend mere goodness and reach greatness.
