10 Things You Didn’t Know About Elvira, Mistress of the Dark

It’s the end of an era in Southern California. Elvira, the legendary Mistress of the Dark, will perform her final stage show this season at the 160-acre amusement park Knott’s Berry Farm. The Queen of Halloween has performed a live show at the venue almost every year since 1983.

Knott’s Berry Farm has humble beginnings. In the 1920s, the Knott family sold berries, jams, and pies from their roadside stand along State Route 39. Today, Knott’s Berry Farm transforms to Knott’s Scary Farm during the spooky season — the oldest and largest Halloween haunt venue. The immersive experience is open from September 21 to October 31 this year. The park features haunted mazes, scare zones, and more.

If you haven’t caught up with Elvira since the horror hostess appeared on TV, here are some fun facts about the Mistress of the Dark that you might not know.

Elvira’s family ran a costume shop. Her mom and aunt used to dress her in elaborate costumes for Halloween. She also liked to dress as popular TV characters from her youth, like Miss Kitty from Gunsmoke.
