On this day in 1997, the paper quizzed several well-known faces – from Anthea Turner to Ken Livingstone – on who their favourite members of the almighty girlband were.
This was, of course, at the height of the girls’ fame, soon after they had bagged their third Number One with their third single, 2 Become 1, at the end of 1996.
It seems Livingstone, David Ammess, Jacob Rees-Mogg and John Whittingdale all shared the same favourite member of the quintet: Victoria Beckham.
The latter two in particular shared a very specific reason: Brexit – which is remarkable considering this was a full 19 years before the historic EU referendum.
“It’s not a subject I spend every waking moment thinking about,” said Whittingdale of the band.
“But Victoria’s opinions on Europe are opinions that I share – and she’s the best looking.”
Rees-Mogg said: “My favourite is the one who is the most Euro-sceptic but I can’t remember what she looks like [Victoria].”
Livingstone, for his part, declared: “Victoria, because I secretly think she’s a Marxist. She might bring down the upper classes.”
Ammess concurred: “I knew about the girls before they declared an interest in politics. My favourite is Victoria.”
Indeed, Posh Spice had said in 1996: “The Euro bureaucrats are destroying every bit of national identity and individuality. We must keep our national individuality.”
Ahead of last year’s vote, however, she actually came out against Brexit.
“In response to the leave.eu campaign who have today tried to put a spin on quotes made 20 years ago about keeping or losing the pound, I have to say strongly my comments were not about this referendum and should not be misused in this way!” she wrote on Instagram.
“I believe in my country, I believe in a future for my children where we are stronger together and I support the remain campaign.”
