Xbox One X UPDATE – Price will ‘not stop console selling 20million units’

The Xbox One X is launching on November 7 and will cost £449 in the UK – it has been dubbed the most powerful console in the world by Microsoft.

Industry analysts have now predicted the price point, which is £100 more than the rival PS4 Pro, will not stop the console selling millions.

DFC Intelligence predict that by the end of 2021 the Xbox One X will have sold 17 million units, and by 2022 it will have sold over 20 million units.

They predict that the total lifetime sales for the Xbox One will be 63 million units worldwide.

While that is a healthy number, that would be 20 million units down on the Xbox 360’s total lifetime sales.

More worryingly, Sony announced after their E3 2017 conference that the PS4 has already sold more than 60.4million units worldwide since its release.

DFC said the main problem facing the Xbox One X is not the price but the stiff competition its faces from the PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Speaking to Gamingbolt, DFC analyst David Cole said: Xbox One X is an expensive system designed to appeal to a fairly narrow demographic of gamers who want high quality graphics but do not want to spend money on a high-end PC.

“The challenge is that is a fairly small addressable market, even as sales of 4k television sets start to soar. Both the Nintendo Switch or Sony PlayStation 4 offer a very strong value proposition that consumers seem to be flocking to.

“Many of the exclusives are fairly minor indie titles that will probably not take advantage of the enhanced graphics features of the system.

“Furthermore, the leap from 1080 to 4k resolution is simply not as revolutionary as the previous movement from standard definition to high definition.”

He said this should lead to slower sales for the Xbox One X than expected, as the PS4 and Nintendo Switch all compete for ownership of gamers’ living rooms.

The Xbox One X, formerly known as Project Scorpio, was unveiled during Microsoft’s E3 event.

The console boasts native 4K gaming, has six teraflops of power and comes with a high-end vapour chamber cooler system.

It will launch alongside a few Xbox One exclusive games, like Crackdown 3 and Super Lucky’s Tale.
