Wonder Woman news: Chris Pine speaks out on role – ‘it’s not a matriarchal structure’

The DC movie Gal Gadot in the title role of Amazonian warrior princess-turned superhero, with Pine taking the coveted place of her love interest as an Air Force pilot who only has eyes for the woman destined to save humanity.

While traditionally Trevor stayed by her side and the comics let the female character do the rescuing for a change, it seems Pine is keen to show audiences a very different path in the storytelling.

Talking to Yahoo at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week, the Star Trek actor said: “The question doesn’t service anything but this narrative of hierarchy. What you’re asking almost flips the script, and the question is, ‘Do I enjoy being the second?'”

Pine is known for his filmography as the action hero and romantic lead, playing the main characters in both the blockbuster franchise Star Trek and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, which was adapted from a series of novels. So it may come as no surprise to fans that the actor doesn’t look forward to shedding some of his perceived masculinity.

The Hollywood star explained: “I think this is a movie about parity. This is a movie about two people bringing a lot to the table with completely disparate qualities. She happens to be a superhero; I happen to be … definitely not.”

He continued: “But there’s no judgement or discussion or conversation in the narrative about a hierarchy. It’s not a matriarchal structure; it’s not a patriarchal structure – it’s just human beings trying to figure out how to live in this awful world.”

Pine is also rumoured to be playing not one but two roles in the Wonder Woman universe after a picture of him in early 20th century clothing with Gal Gadot recently surfaced. This led fans well-versed in the lore of the character to speculate that the actor will be playing Steve Trevor’s grandfather (whom Wonder Woman’s Diana actually meets first) during flashbacks.

The film’s director, Patty Jenkins, agreed with Pine that the film does not need to usurp or match gender stereotypes traditionally shown in Hollywood films, saying: “I don’t think anybody wants that out of any love interest. Not either gender. And that’s why it was so fun to do.

“I don’t think we looked at it that way: ‘Who’s got the upper hand? Who’s got the lower hand?’ This is a love story about a character who comes to this world who needs to meet people who help her guide the way.”

Perhaps the film wants to emulate the later comics, in which Steve Trevor’s part expands when he becomes a secret-agent for character Amanda Waller’s agency ARGUS. He also adds government-Justice League liaison to his list of employments. In his early appearances however, the American officer remained a sole love interest for Wonder Woman.

The actor also recently appeared with a new look after shaving off all of his hair.

Wonder Woman will be released on 2nd June this year.
