Season 7 of the smash HBO show left fans reeling from two huge revelations.
The death of Viserion and the final confirmation of Jon Snow’s true parentage was massive shocks for many, but both can now be closely tied the actual names of the dragons.
George RR Martin is even more cunning than we realised and has spent years carefully layering clues and predictions into his source novels which form the epic A Song of Ice and Fire.
The dragon names explain why Viserion had to die and exactly what lies in store for Daenerys and Jon.
George RR Martin relies heavily on symbolism and many fans have already started to figure out how the Stark Direwolves predicted the actions and ultimate fates of their owners.
This can also be applied to Danerys’ dragons and the importance of each of their names.
The dragons were named after the Targaryen queen’s three male relationships at the time of their births – Viserion for her foolish fallen brother Vyserys, Drogon for her Dothraki husband Khal Drogo, and Rhaegar after her older brother Rhaegar.
WINDS OF WINTER RELEASE DATE: WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER BOOK FIRE AND BLOOD
Reddit user mybustersword explains: “Which dragon was killed? The one named after the brother who died.
“Drogon is her strongest and fiercest dragon. I don’t believe he will die because Drogo promised to conquer the lands for her, and he will. He will also be the one to kill Vyserion, the ice dragon, as the man did to the brother.”
Obviously, Prince Rhaegar was also killed, which does not bode well for his dragon. But the fierce creature will need to get his rider first.
The Targaryen prince secretly took Lyanna Star as his wife, making Jon Snow the legitimate heir to the Iron Throne.
It also makes it virtually impossible to imagine that he isn’t going to be the one who rides the dragon which was named after his father.
But who or what will then kill Drogon and Rhaegar?
Reddit use Fishingfor said: “Viserion died quickly and violently after being hit with ice while Viserys died quickly and violently being covered in molten gold (fire).
“Drogo got a wound in his shoulder and died a while after from witchcraft or infection… Drogon got a wound in the shoulder from Bronn.
“Rhaegar was killed by Robert caving his chest in so maybe Gendry will somehow, accidentally, kill Rhaegal?”
