‘Westworld’ Season 2 Trailer: Those Violent Delights Return

Westworld Season 2 trailer

Those killer robots are back for an all-new season of Westworld. HBO dropped a new Westworld season 2 trailer during the Super Bowl, and you can check it out below. The show returns this April.

Westworld is one of HBO’s best shows, and with Game of Thrones not returning until 2019, they’re hoping their violent, sexy, dramatic robot thriller will hold audiences rapt with its second season. To seal the deal, the network has purchased their first Super Bowl ad in 20 years: a new trailer for season 2. Westworld season 1 ended with a lot of things still up in the air, which perfectly sets the stage for a new, intense season. Check out the Westworld season 2 trailer below.

Westworld Season 2 Trailer

This is one intense trailer; those slow-motion bulls running wild through the Westworld command center make for some stunning imagery. I know some people had problems with Westworld season 1 – it’s twisty, Lost-inspired story structure, full of big reveals and key details being deliberately withheld to further the mystery, brought out complaints on Twitter. But the end result was a meticulously crafted, very entertaining, often disturbing sci-fi drama, featuring a phenomenal cast giving some great performances. Evan Rachel Wood and Thandie Newton both did some of the best work of their careers during season 1, and I have no doubt they’ll continue to knock it out of the park in season 2. Co-stars Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, Ed Harris, and Jimmi Simpson will all be returning as well.

This trailer gives us just a hint of what we can expect in the new season. In the past, Jonathan Nolan, who co-created the series with Lisa Joy, has said that what he really wants to do is explore more worlds beyond the Westworld. “This park contains multitudes,” said Nolan. “We hope to explore that in the seasons going forward.” Moving beyond the Western-themed park was teased at the end of season 1, when we got a glimpse of Samurai robots.

Westworld season 1 ended in 2016, but fans expected the show to return in 2017 were met with the disappointment of a full year delay. Jonathan Nolan, who co-created the series with Lisa Joy, provided this explanation for the delay:

“We said to the network very early that this was a different kind of show, having gone through the experience of making the pilot. Game of Thrones is incredibly ambitious, and that was part of the reason we knew we wanted to make this show with HBO. Game of Thrones kind of has written the book on production value for television, and how to make something that has all the scope and scale of cinema for a TV show…But we knew for ourselves that going forward, the production is enormously challenging and ambitious, and so is the writing. So we said very early on that we wouldn’t be able to turn this around every year, and knowing full well that that’s been a time-honored tradition in television.”

Westworld season 2 premieres April 22, 2018.
