While they may not be to everyone’s taste, chili peppers and jalapenos contain a compound called capsaicin, which has been proven by some studies to boost metabolism and increase the burning of fat.
The ingredient has also been proven to reduce appetite and calorie intake.
One study titled ‘Could capsaicinoids help to support weight management? A systematic review and meta-analysis of energy intake data’.
The report concluded: “Meta-analysis findings suggest that daily consumption of capsaicinoids may contribute to weight management through reductions in energy intake.
“Subsequently, there may be potential for capsaicinoids to be used as long-term, natural weight-loss aids.”
Research published in the journal Obesity Open Access discovered that an extract from red hot peppers boosted it’s rate.
In the study, the researchers monitored 40 healthy adults.
They examined the effect of a supplementation of capsicum extract – called Capsimax – or a placebo, on resting energy expenditure, heart rate and blood pressure.
The study showed that a low dose of capsicum extract increased metabolic rate to the equivalent of burning an extra 116 calories a day.
This would mean a pound of fat lost over 30 days.
Abhijit Bhattacharya, President of OmniActive Health Technologies Ltd., producers of Capsimax, said: “Ageing is inevitable, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be active participants in our weight management as we age.
“Capsimax is supported by multiple studies with findings showing safety, increased lipolysis and satiety and improved healthy body composition.”
Other research reveals eating eggs every day could help you lose weight fast.
Egg breakfasts have been shown to cause up to 65 per cent greater weight loss over eight weeks.
A study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health showed the weight loss of healthy overweight or obese participants.
