Since his pop band phenomenon One Direction split last year, the 23-year-old star has launched his solo career, with his debut single, Sign Of The Times, going straight to number one in the UK charts after its release last week.
During a SNL skit called Celebrity Family Feud: Time Travel Edition, Harry brought out his hysterical and spookily on-the-money impression of the now 73-year-old Rolling Stones legend.
Wearing a wavy, shoulder-length wig, a 1970s-style cream suit with oversized lapels and a white shirt unbuttoned down to his chest, he nailed Mick’s famously exaggerated mouth movements and jittery persona.
When host Steve Harvey (played by Kenan Thompson) asked about Mick’s music as a solo artist, he quipped: “Solo? Why would anyone in a successful band go solo? That is insane!”
Simultaneously sending up his own career and the rock legend, who released his own album in 1985, Harry had the audience in fits of giggles with his impression.
Later, Steve asked Harry’s character what kept him up at night, and he got the audience wondering if he was alluding to Mick or himself when he was replied: “If I’m up at night it’s because I’ve got a little company, you know, a little hanky panky.”
He was joined in the gameshow skit by comedienne Kate McKinnon playing Twilight star Kristen Stewart, host Jimmy Fallon as both a young and current John Travolta, Cecily Strong as Liza Minelli and Melissa Villasenor as The Voice US coach Gwen Stefani.
During the show, Harry also performed his new single live for the first time, taking to the stage with a captivating rendition and even showing off a previously unheard brand new track, Ever Since New York.
Last night’s episode was the first time that SNL has aired live at the same time from coast to coast in the US.
One Direction announced they were going their separate ways last year as Harry, Niall Horan, 23, Zayn Malik, 24, Louis Tomlinson, 25, and new dad Liam Payne, 23, decided to take a break to explore solo projects.
