The story of Karen Matthews staging the disappearance of her own daughter, then nine-year-old Shannon Matthews, in 2008 has been a hot topic on TV recently.
The BBC aired two-part series The Moorside starring Sheridan Smith in February, which replayed the events that happened after the news of Shannon’s disappearance broke.
And last night, Channel 5 broadcasted a documentary featuring news footage and interviews including one with Karen’s close friend Julie Bushby who revealed her thoughts about the shocking case.
But viewers watching were not impressed and slammed the programme for being “disappointing” as many believed it was going to show Karen’s point of view and her account of the events.
One Twitter user wrote: “#shannonmatthews None of this is new. None of it seems to be anything other than a platform for the opinion of her “mates”. Disappointing.”
“This is just like every other #ShannonMatthews documentary. This is suppose to be #TheMothersStory so where is #KarenMatthews in this,” commented another.
A third stated: “#karenmatthews #themothersstory Not getting much of her story here to be fair.”
“#Karenmatthews “The mother’s story” as told by everyone else,” added another.
Karen and her accomplice, her then-boyfriend’s uncle Michael Donovan, were found to have lied about Shannon’s disappearance in order to claim a £50,000 reward.
The pair were both found guilty and were jailed for kidnapping, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.
They were released from prison in 2012 and Shannon, now 18-years-old, has been given a new identity and lives with a new family.
