Victoria Christmas special: Return sparks HUGE fallout as writer teases 'danger'

The historical drama will delve into the Victorians’ influence on the festive season as we know it today during the Christmas special, following two seasons of the hugely-successful ITV series.

Now executive producer Daisy Goodwin has hinted at the trouble ahead for leads Queen Victoria (played by Jenna Coleman) and Prince Albert (Tom Hughes) in an interview with TV Times.

“Victoria and Albert loved winter. When we filmed those scenes they made it look so cold that you found yourself shivering even though it was warm.

“But there is a life-threatening situation…” she admitted.

Set in 1846, Daisy also explained the reasoning behind the upcoming storyline, which sees the monarch’s mother (Catherine Flemming) returning to cause havoc alongside the King of Hanover (Peter Firth).

“It’s a huge honour to have a Christmas special and there was real justification for one because Albert’s relationship with Christmas is so integral,” she said. “He puts on the blingiest Christmas ever!

“You’ll really learn to love him because he’s desperate to make it a success, but he makes mistakes and there’s a lot of tension and moral dilemmas in the palace.”

The series’ stars also shared their favourite moments from the episode, with Jenna, 31, insisting it was the family scenes that tug at the heartstrings.

She said: “I love the one with Victoria and Albert’s children coming in to open their presents on Christmas Eve.

“The children who play them were so excited and the set has a lovely familial feel now that they are older, you feel like you are in a home, not a palace.”

The Victoria Christmas special will air Christmas Day at 9pm on ITV.
