Versailles season three ended on Monday, August 6 on BBC Two.
Fans immediately took to Twitter after the finale to campaign for the show to be saved with #SaveVersaillesSeries and #saveversailles hashtags.
So far, there have been thousands of tweets with the hashtags and a Change.org campaign set up with 4,920 signatures so far.
Versailles followed the story of King Louis XIV (played by George Blagden) and his controversial reign. Season three addressed the 1680s, which are regarded as the height of his reign as he had control over the church and the aristocracy and France was the leading power in Europe.
Will Versailles return?
Versailles season four has not been confirmed by Canal Plus, the French channel behind the series.
Versailles was originally intended to run for four seasons, however, in April, it was announced season three would be the shows last.
Fabric de la Patelliere, head of fiction at Canal Plus said: “The series was meant to chronicle the coming of age and rise to power of Louis XIV and show how he built Versailles to corral his nobles, asserting his absolute power.
“At the end of the third season, Louis XIV has achieved absolute power, he’s 46 or 47 years old, so we reached the end of the narrative arc that we had envisioned for this series.”
Actress Jenny Platt who played Parisian shoemaker Jeanne in Versailles spoke to Express.co.uk earlier this year.
Platt explained: “I think people were very sad but also you could see everybody was very proud of the work and the actors who had been in it for three years, they were all saying they are going to miss it hugely but at the same time, they think the producers are right, actually the story of King Louis after this point is kind of less interesting.
“So you have got all the story as far as it can go but I think everybody feels quite happy that it is the right time, the right time to end it on a high.”
Has Versailles been saved?
As of yet, Versailles has not been saved.
Actor Evan Williams who played the beloved Chevalier de Lorraine sent Versailles fans into meltdown earlier this week.
He responded to a tweet that said: “Can we please get to know more about Chevalier’s origins and his family? What life he had before Monsieur? Was he married, did he have children? And I’m still p***** they didn’t show us Chevalier as a brave soldier. HE’S CAPABLE OF SO MUCH MORE #SaveVersaillesSeries #Versailles.”
Williams replied: “I mean.. it goes without saying that I’d be all over this. Tell your friends to sign, support from all over the world can’t be ignored. I will just say, conversations are being had.. #SaveVersaillesSeries.“
One fan responded: “That last sentence is the best thing I have heard in days #SaveVersailles.“
Another added: “@evan_m_williams please don’t tease us. We want more of you… So MUCH more!”
Fans also believe it could be possible Evan’s character Chevalier de Lorraine and Prince Philippe (played by Alexander Vlahos) could have a spin-off series.
The two lovers reconciled in the season three finale.
Vlahos told RadioTimes: “There should be a MonChevy spin-off which is the two of us, basically. And I always joked to Evan, I said it should be completely different to Versailles. It should be a live studio audience, it should be a sitcom – a Friends-type thing. And half-an-hour episodes of us just getting into nonsense.
He also said about a potential season four: “It’s not a no, but it’s: not now.”
Seasons 1-2 are available to watch via Amazon Prime now. Season 3 will be available later this year.
